Once a year the faculty members vote on a Staff Member of the Year for St. James School. While this decision is always a tough one, each year one of the many stellar staff members at our school is recognized for her hard work, spirit, and dedication to the students of St. James. This year, our school is proud to announce that first grade teacher, Mrs. Renee Barnett, has been selected for this honor.
To be eligible, a staff member must have worked at St. James School during the previous school year. Besides this, the staff member should represent the values of the Catholic faith and St. James School. This staff member should be held in high regard by peers, students, and parents and be an integral part of the St. James community.
Mrs. Barnett is known for her positive attitude, quick smile and laugh, and her energy. She works hard on a daily basis to encourage and challenge her students. Beyond her classroom, she helps mentor new teachers, serves as a team leader, and is a member of the school’s Leadership Team. Now in her 13th year of teaching, we are proud that she has spent ten of those years at St. James.
Renee has been married to Scott for nearly 24 years and is the proud mother of Dylan and Camryn. Both of her children are graduates of St. James School.
Mrs. Barnett was surprised with this recognition at the end of an all school mass on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. After receiving the award she thanked her colleagues and students and said, “I am blessed to work with such wonderful people and in a place that is committed to students and their learning. This means so much coming from the people that I think so highly of!”

Dear St. James Families,
St. James School has registered to take part in the 25 Day Challenge presented by SPARK and Lets Move, Active Schools. The Challenge is simple! Students can choose to pledge to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for 25 days. (This can include recess, PE class, team practice time, etc.) The goal is 60 minutes per day, for at least 5 days per week. It’s okay if they miss a day as long as they have 25 done at the end of the month. The Challenge takes place September 29th – October 31st. Our goal is to have the highest percentage of participation within our school! To participate, students simply fill out a Pledge Form and Physical Activity Log and turn them in to their homeroom teacher on Monday Nov. 3rd. Our school has a chance to WIN between $2,500 and $25,000 worth of equipment, curriculum and training supplies to help continue to make St. James a healthy place to learn!

Mrs. Sue Zapf, one of our kindergarten teachers, was recently named an Outstanding Educator by Cincy Magazine. The magazine recognized several area K-12 educators from both private and public schools. The magazine stated that, "Each nominee takes teaching to a higher level, going above and beyond the standard of teaching and care for our students inside and outside the classroom." This is certainly true for Mrs. Zapf. She is a wonderful and caring teacher. We are so proud of her and excited for the rest of the city to know what we have known about her for awile. Congratulations Mrs. Zapf!

The 8th Grade Leadership Council saw a problem and decided they could do something about it. The Council decided to adopt JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) as its charity to support. The students know that there are several students in the school who have diabetes and have to deal with it on a daily basis. The group set a goal to raise funds to help support JDRF and show their classmates that they stand with them. The group sold JDRF shoes for $1.00 for one week. In about a week's time, the group had collected $1,145.50 from the generosity of teachers, students, and their families.
As a result, our school cafeteria is covered in shoes! It is a great visual reminder of the generosity and giving spirit of this school community. Thank you to everyone for your support!

Saint James School was recently awarded a $1,000 Learning Links grant from The Greater Cincinnati Foundation. The grant is for our project, "The Spanish Language and Culture throughout Our School".
For the past several years Saint James School has offered Spanish classes to the students in 7th and 8th grade. Now, we are excited to be able to offer this opportunity for all of our students. Mrs. Jennifer Streicher teaches students from kindergarten through 8th grade in weekly Spanish classes. These classes focus on the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
In order for these classes to be more effective, additional funds are needed. Our school applied for this grant last spring so that we can purchase materials and supplies to be used by Mrs. Streicher and the students. Having manipulatives in the classroom can strengthen comprehension and understanding.
Mrs. Streicher is looking forward to purchasing these items for our Spanish classes in the coming weeks to help strengthen our new Spanish program. We are grateful for the generosity of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation and thank them for their support.
Anyone* (not previously approved) who coaches, volunteers, or any person who regularly has contact in any capacity with the children of Saint James needs to meet the following Archdiocese requirements and be approved before you can begin coaching, volunteering, etc.
(*NOTE: Anyone who has already been approved and been previously certified on the “Decree on Child Protection” is grandfathered into the program, BUT will eventually need to attend a “VIRTUS” Session before June, 30, 2014.)
These are: 1) that you attend a “VIRTUS” Protecting God’s Children Workshop and 2) *that you be fingerprinted and 3) the parish receives an approval letter from the Archdiocese. This could take 2-3 weeks for the parish to receive the results. *Per the new Archdiocese policy, ANY employee and/or volunteer must have a completed Archdiocese of Cincinnati Background Check Release Form signed by a designated Parish representative. You need to have this form with you or you will be required to pay cash on the spot before any of the OTHER fingerprinting sites will fingerprint you. You can stop by the Parish Office during business hours to pick up a form if you plan on being fingerprinted at another location. Other fingerprinting sites are listed on the Archdiocese Web Page. See our links page or go to: www.catholiccincinnati.org/protecting-children/.
Visit the parish's website at www.stjameswhiteoak.com and click on the Parish Info tab, then the Archdiocese Child Protection Policy for fingerprinting days and times and instructions for preregistration for the VIRTUS class. Preregistration is required. Saint James will be having a class for Saint James staff and/or parishioners only on Saturday, September 15 at 9:00 am in the Marian Room, located in the Parish Center Building. For other class days, times, and locations, visit www.virtus.org.
Please plan on joining us for the Kick-Off Day on August 17 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Parents and students are invited to visit their new classrooms and meet their new teachers. Students may bring in some of their classroom supplies. Parents can stop by the PTO Spirit Shop and the Uniform Closet.
All students must be accompanied by an adult.
We hope to see everyone there!

The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, was the site of the 28th Annual Power of the Pen State Competition for Young Writers. The event was held on May 25, 2012.
This tournament is the culmination of twenty-eight District and twelve Regional competitions held throughout the State of Ohio. Approximately 700 writers from 276 schools in Ohio participated in the all-day writing tournament.
Students from grades seven and eight competed in four 35-minute writing rounds and a “Power Round”, vying for trophies, certificates, savings bonds, cash prizes, and college scholarships valued at more than $100,000 for demonstrating excellence in writing. All writing is in response to prompts not known in advance.
Representing Saint James School at the State Tournament were Patrick Raneses and Hannah Smith who successfully competed at District and Regional tournaments to qualify for the State Tournament.
Patrick Raneses placed an amazing 11th in the eighth grade level.
The Power of the Pen Tournaments and the Ohio Interscholastic Writing League, which honor excellence in creative writing, are ideas originated and developed by Lorraine Merrill of Richfield, Ohio, who now administers the statewide program. Power of the Pen works with 500 middle schools throughout Ohio, and generates 25,000 pieces of writing annually.
